Cubs Open Spring Training
The Cubs hammered the Oakland A’s in the first spring training game of the season. Sure, it’s a meaningless game, but for once all of the parts were working. Star rookies and new free agents, pitchers and batters; error free baseball, with 5 homers and 16 hits. Final score 9-3, and the game wasn’t as close as it sounds. Why can’t this kind of stuff happen in the regular season? Why can’t it happen post-season?
Each spring this happens. WC’s world class losers and chokers inspire fresh hope that this could be it, this could be the team, this could be the year. It never lasts. Worse, Cubs’ fans know it isn’t going to last and hope and despair get mingled into this stomach-churning thing that is all about being a Cubs’ fan. It really is a kind of helpless, hopeless, sick addiction.
But hey, Tyler Colvin 3 for 3 with a homer; Byrd 2 for 2 with a homer. Randy Wells threw two perfect innings. It could happen! This could be the year!
A long time ago, the Chicago Tribune used to headline Opening Day each year, “Cubs Tied for First!” This year, it could happen. Really. Remember, you read it here first.
