Yoda is a Boreal Owl. He’s been in captivity for some 14 years, making him at least 15 years old. An injury damaged his foot; he cannot grip prey and so cannot hunt. He’s retired from a long – very long – career as an educational bird.
For scale, this little guy is about ten inches tall, with a wing span of about 23 inches. In the wild, a Boreal Owl might live 3.5 to 4 years; the record is 11 years. Yoda would regard such a bird as still a kid.
Yoda is in very good health for his age. True, he’s balding, he has incipient cataracts and he tends to fall asleep a lot, but he still seems to have a lot of fun watching neighborhood songbirds zip around.
Yoda is the last remaining owl living with WC and Mrs. WC. He might be a bit spoiled. But he’s a fine old man, well worth the inconvenience of having mice thawing in the refrigerator.
