Judas Goats and Election 2014

WC’s rule of thumb for elections is that if multi-billionaires back a candidate, that candidate isn’t likely to represent WC’s interests in Congress. No, that candidate is more likely to be a Judas Goat, leading the poor dumb voters to the economic slaughterhouse.

Judas goats have fallen out of fashion, but are still used in smaller slaughterhouse operations. Wikipedia defines Judas goats:

The Judas goat is trained to associate with sheep or cattle, leading them to a specific destination. In stockyards, a Judas goat will lead sheep to slaughter, while its own life is spared. Judas goats are also used to lead other animals to specific pens and onto trucks.

And if you think about it for a moment, that’s the role of the Tea Party and the role of the Kochtopus-backed candidates for Congress. The multi-billionares want someone who will support them while keeping the sheep passive as they are led to the economic slaughterhouse.

You think WC is indulging his propensity for hyperbole? Let’s look at one specific example, and then the national trends.

According to the News-Miner‘s excellent election map, the good citizens of North Pole voted overwhelmingly for Dan “the Carpetbagger” Sullivan.

North Pole suffered an economic catastrophe this year when its largest single employer and taxpayer, Flint Hills Refinery, was shut down by its owners, the Koch Brothers. Yet those same North Pole voters overwhelmingly supported the Carpetbagger, whose largest financial supporter was Americans for Prosperity, which is part of the Kochtopus, the complex of PACs, SuperPACs and dark money 501(c)(4)s controlled and operated by those same Koch Brothers. That’s right, North Pole overwhelmingly backed the candidate of the corporate barons who had just savaged them.

No flock of sheep was more passively led to the economic slaughterhouse. And the Judas Goat who led them is the Carpetbagger.

That’s a local example. But WC isn’t simply picking on the good citizens of North Pole. They’re part of the national trend. Let’s look first at what is happening to the middle class in America:

Median income in the United States fell off a cliff in 2007. The impact left middle class wealth substantially lower than it was 30 years ago, in 1984. By contrast, the wealth of the top 5% of Americans increased by almost 100% over the same period. The wealthy have emerged from the Bush Recession just fine, thank you. The rest of us? Not so much. Folks who claim otherwise have resorted to smoke and mirror arguments, but the economic crisis for the middle class in the United States is really beyond dispute.

Yet control of the U.S. Senate has been given to candidates backed by the wealthiest Americans. Senate races in six key states were won by candidates backed by the Kochtopus. Voters, in their effort to make things better, have elected Judas Goats nationwide, who aren’t going to do anything their billionaire masters donors don’t want and most of what they do want.

Higher taxes on the ultra-rich? A sensible tax treatment of money earned by hedge fund managers? Funding for improvements to our aging national infrastructure?  A carbon tax to mitigate climate change? Sensible treatment for the millions of illegal immigrants? Not a chance.

Further reductions in the safety net for the disadvantaged? Further cuts to education? Reduction of social security? A frozen federal minimum wage? Deregulation of industries and relaxed federal safety standards? You betcha.

Each of these new members of Congress is focused on getting himself or herself re-elected. That involves raising immense amount of monies for the next campaign. Those monies, in this post-Citizens United world, overwhelmingly come from the richest 1% of Americans. If you don’t think each member of Congress is aware of those facts, and adjusts their actions accordingly, you’re living in a dream world.

Don’t misunderstand. A Judas Goat is a kind of leader. But the bitter irony is that the herd has elected Judas Goats at a time when we needed real leaders. WC suspects – no, WC is certain – that the voters aren’t going to like where the Judas Goats lead them.

  1. Be it a swan song, or the light-at-the-end-of-‘THE’-tunnel paradigm shift, I am taking solace in New Hampshire, and possibly Virginia’s admittance to the Blue Wall and those 257, or maybe more, electoral votes a comin’.
