WC Has a House Guest – Update January 31

WC has previously reported a house guest.

Western Screech-Owl male, watching the female check out the nest box

Western Screech-Owl male, watching the female check out the nest box

Saturday night we watched a lady owl visit the nest box. A little later, the male joined her in the box. We can only speculate, and young children read this blog. But the second step toward having an active nest has been met: our boy has a date. The date was interested enough in the box to have a look inside. And then to let the male join her. You are now invited to waggle your eyebrows.

Screech-owls are nocturnal. There’s very little light when they are out and about. WC could use a flash, but that might chase the birds away. So, for now at least, we’ll make do with these semi-silhouettes.

WC will keep you apprised.

  1. You seem to have attracted your owls fairly quickly.
    I also live on a postage stamp sized lot in an urban area, and I would like to see if I can attract an eastern screech owl (I guess the main difference between the western and eastern is their voice).
    I have a couple of questions about your owl box;
    Did you make it yourself or purchase it, and are there certain requirements for the box (height off the ground, hole size, etc.)?
