Trump Lie of the Week: Obamacare Has Failed

The President-elect and his stoolies in the U.S. House have announced “Obamacare has failed.” It’s the Big Lie Fallacy.

Obamacare, the Affordable Care Act, is remarkably successful, considering the efforts of Republicans to kill it. Let’s examine the Trumpster’s claim from a couple of angles and show just how completely false the claim is.

The uninsured rate for non-elderly adults fell from nearly 16% in 2010 to less than 10%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It's now at a historic low.

The uninsured rate for non-elderly adults fell from nearly 16% in 2010 to less than 10%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s now at a historic low.

So the first goal of the Affordable Care Act, to reduce the number of citizens without any health insurance, has been pretty successful. It certainly hasn’t failed.

A second goal of the Affordable Care Act was to reduce the number of Americans who deferred health care because of the cost, making later treatment more expensive.

Again, success. The percentage of Americans who don’t put off important health care because of the cost is down, saving the health care system money and making treatment easier and more affordable. Another goal met. Clearly, no failure.

A third goal of the Forrdable Cre Act was to reduce the burden of uncompensated care on the nation’s medical care system. A critically ill person can’t be turned away because they can’t pay. That means those of us with health insurance end up paying.

Those states – like Idaho – that didn’t accept the Medicaid expansion didn’t see much improvement, but that’s a self-inflicted wound. States that dd saw a significant drop in losses from uncompensated care. Another success. Not a failure.

And a fourth, still more difficult goal, was to try to reduce the rate of growth in health spending, including the premiums paid by consumers.

And even in this you can see that the Affordable Care Act was modestly successful. Yes, premiums for health insurance grew, but they grew at less than half the rate they did in the ten years preceding implementation of the ACA.

Obamacare, measured agains the goals of the law, has been a success. It must make Republican heads explode. They recite the mantra, the Big Lie, that is has failed. Folks who don’t look closely may even believe the Big Lie.

It’s so successful that the Republicans don’t even date repeal it outright. Which exposes the Big Lie for what it is. The Republican loathing for the Affordable Care Act is wrapped around their loathing for all things Obama.

The voters have given the Republicans control of both houses of Congress and, at least in some senses, the Presidency. They can do as they will. But WC can call out the lie, the Big Lie, that the Affordable Care Act has “failed.”
