Desiree Fairooz laughed out loud at Sen. Richard Shelby’s (R, Alabama) assertion that Senator Jeff Sessions had a “clear and well-documented” record of “treating all Americans equally under the law.” That was during Sessions’ confirmation hearing to be Attorney General.
The Justice Department has announced it will retry Fairooz, who was arrested for her laughter during Sessions’s confirmation hearing. Fairooz was convicted earlier, by the trial judge tossed out the first conviction back in July because “laughter alone was legally insufficient to convict someone of disorderly or disruptive behavior on Capitol grounds, or disrupting Congress.” Fairooz faces up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine for laughing at Senator Shelby’s outrageous whopper.
Why does WC call Senator Shelby’s comment a whopper? Because Jeff Sessions, while U.S. Attorney for Alabama. said the NAACP, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Operation PUSH and the National Council of Churches were all “un-American organizations teaching anti-American values.” He said that he thought they “did more harm than good; they were trying to force civil rights down the throats of people who were trying to put problems behind them.” This is the man who said, “You know the NAACP hates white people; they are out to get them. That is why they bring these lawsuits, and they are a commie group and a pinko organization as well.”
So, yes, it was entirely appropriate for Fairooz to laugh out loud in response to Senator Shelby’s whopper.
Yet you laugh a Jeff Sessions at your peril.
The USDOJ is going to need to double its staff if it is going to prosecute everyone who laughs at the clown that is Attorney General.
WC suggests the only reasonable course of action is to laugh out loud at him at every opportunity. Not because he is amusing, or entertaining. But because he needs to be mocked. And he plainly cannot tolerate laughter. Have your bail money at hand but, yes, laugh in his face. Mock him every chance. Just months into his time as AG, he had already retired the John Mitchell Trophy for politicalization of the USDOJ.
Plainly, he cannot stand laughter. So laugh, derisively. At every chance.
