Maybe We Should Do Something More?

Stephen Crane, about March 1896

Sometimes, when WC sees everyone on social media wringing their hands and eating their hearts out, it feels like WC has fallen into a Stephen Crane poem:1

In the Desert
by Stephen Crane

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.

I said, “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter—bitter,” he answered;
“But I like it
“Because it is bitter
“And because it is my heart.”

You see, it’s not enough to sit in the desert – political or otherwise – gnawing on our hearts, bitter and alone.

We can vote.

We can encourage others to vote.

When circumstances allow, we can give money to candidates who would like to change thingsfor the better.

Or we can be bitter, sit in the desert, and gnaw on our hearts.

  1. More proof of the perils of a classical education.

  1. Thank you for the thought. I have always been frustrated and puzzled by those who complain and gnaw away but to not pay attention to the candidates and their positions. They may see and hear 15 second sound bites or slanted political adds, or “news” reports and pay attention to just those that have an R or D connected to their name because they have for whatever reason decided that R or D grants them some special status. Many of these same people continue to gnaw and complain after the election even though they did not bother to get informed, think and vote!

  2. I like the footnote. I use similar words whenever I find I have successfully predicted a Jeopardy! clue just by hearing the categories announced.😀😀

  3. As fate would have it, I have a large family, and mostly conservatives.
In a conversation with one of them, retired well-off ex-self made, etc., after some dialectical manoeuvres, finally made some progress. He told me he especially appreciated my willingness to listen and engage in a non-judgemental, non-confrontational exchange.
The mistake that most liberals, me included, are making is that we’re sometimes not listening and not engaging the people that are being duped by the GOP (the most dangerous organization on earth, according to Noam Chomsky and not only).
We need to bring out information, and not hit people over the head with it, but engage, listen and converse.
We need to make some headways.
Thanks WC for your tireless efforts.
