The Government Shutdown Explained

WC will undertake to explain the nation’s longest, stupidest government shutdown in words that possibly even Donald Trump can understand.

  1. There is no emergency at the border. It’s clear that illegal immigration is down and has been down for a while now. If there was truly an emergency, Congress would have addressed it when the Republicans controlled the U.S. House.
    .
  2. Illegal drugs aren’t brought in to the United States by illegal border crossings. Most illegal drugs from Mexico enter through ports of entry, lawful crossing points, where they pass through without detection. Fentanyl, the deadly super-heroin, mostly comes from China, not Mexico. A wall isn’t going to help with the illegal drug problem in any significant way.
    .
  3. The majority of illegal immigrants is lawful visitors who overstay their visas. A wall along the Mexican border isn’t going to help that problem in the slightest.
    .
  4. Even if there was a crisis at the Mexican border, walls don’t work. They don’t stop people from crossing. Deadly deserts and natural barriers don’t work. Walls, from the Great Wall of China to the Berlin Wall, haven’t worked. It’s the unequivocal lesson of history. It might be more productive to simply burn the money to create watch fires along the border.
    .
  5. The $5.6 billion Trump is demanding won’t build a significant part of his wall. The cost of Trump’s wall is more like $70 billion.
    .
  6. Trump, during his presidential campaign, indulged in the logical fallacy known as the appeal to ignorance. His chants of “Build the wall” assumed a false premise: that a wall would control illegal immigration.[^1]
    .
  7. Trump now feels trapped by his campaign promise, wedged between his base voters who have bought in to that false premise and promise, and the realities of government. His concern isn’t the mythical border crisis; it’s disaffecting his base. Trump was prepared to sign a funding extension without border wall funding until Ann Coulter called him out.
    .
  8. It’s always a mistake to give in to an extortionist. You reward the very behavior you are attempting to control.
    .
  9. The “fight” over funding Trump’s wall is a distraction from the bigger issue of addressing the millions of undocumented people living in the United States, and threatens to poison that much more important issue.

The federal government is shut down because Trump lacks the moral and political courage to admit his campaign promise was a lie, a mistake and fundamentally racist. WC suggests it will remain closed down until a sufficient number of Republican senators publicly admit the President’s position is wrong.

Don’t hold your breath.
